Taking a break

Everyone has the right to enjoy a few days to take a break and rest. Today we focus on caregivers, because providing care day in and day out eventually can become a source of stress for anyone. If the health of the carer suffers, so does the situation of the dependent person. Below we present some services that can help carers arrange a holiday to the Costa Brava and the Girona Pyrenees that will allow them to enjoy the leisure time they need to recharge their batteries.

Homecare from a paid carer

The Zorg Team Costa Brava, directed by nurse Marijke Smudde, guarantees health care in different languages: Catalan, Spanish, English, Dutch and German. It provides care services for people in the Costa Brava area: medical care, structural home care, personal hygiene or palliative care. It also offers equipment rental, such as wheelchairs or orthopaedic equipment, and has a 24-hour alarm system.

All these services are available to residents, especially foreign senior citizens established in the Costa Brava, and to tourists of all ages who visit the Costa Brava during their holidays. Zorg Team Costa Brava works across Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Pals. It also advises visitors on the choice of suitable accommodation and has agreements with several insurance companies in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Care homes

With the aim of improving the quality of life of the carers by providing them with rest and reducing the family burden, there are several residences that offer respite services. This is the case of the Fundació Map‘s Montserrat Care Home in Ripoll. For ten years now, it has offered two respite places for temporary stays. It is an old four-storey house that has been refurbished and is open 365 days a year and 24 hours a day. It provides care for adults, mainly people with intellectual disabilities, but also people with physical or sensory disabilities.

In Banyoles, the Fundació Estany has been offering a family respite service since 2008. This is a support programme offered to family members or people who have a disabled person in their care, whether they are adults or children, and consists of two residential places in a care home. There is also a service with home support staff, a programme offered in collaboration with Dincat. And in Figueres, the Fundació Privada Altem offers a respite serviceconsisting of a temporary residential stay for adults with intellectual disabilities or mental illness.Because of the Covid-19, it is recommended to check on each centre to ensure that each service is active.
